Forest Research Institution Malaysia

In recent years, we could see various impacts of deforestation all over the world. It seems that our environment is slowly devastating due to human activities such as illegal logging. Human who become the earth main inhabitants sometimes exploits the environment for their own purposes without realising the importance of forest to every living thing. For that matter, in Malaysia we have an association in which focusing on forest research and reservation. Forest Research Institution Malaysia or FRIM is established mainly to conduct a research about the forest in Malaysia. This unit is headquartered in Kepong, Selangor and has seven sub-stations around Malaysia such as in Segamat, Johor. Public can experience the natural environment and gain knowledge by visiting the FRIM directly or visiting its web page at www.frim.gov.my.
FRIM not only provides wide information about forest in Malaysia which includes flora and fauna, but most importantly to identify, and understand genetic functions of forest plants and to conserve biodiversity and genetic resources. From the briefing which has been conducted by FRIM officer, Encik Faisal, he said that the institute also serves as a unit or home for research to support the ecological conservation of plant and animal species. For example, FRIM carry out a research in Termology which focusing on insect. As far as I am concern, the research that has been done is aiming to sustain environment in forest. Furthermore, from the research, human can learn about flora and fauna and also various endangered and threatened species in the forest. Therefore, more or less, we as public will realise the significant of the forest as a habitat to all plant and animals.
In addition, FRIM exposes the public to the values of forest in term of genetic, medicine, water, money, gasses such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and as well as flora and fauna. Forest has many precious values as it is the main sources of oxygen. All living things depend on oxygen to keep on living. Bear in mind that without the plant in the forest, carbon cycle and photosynthesis process will not happen. Thus, the decreasing of oxygen and increasing of carbon dioxide gasses will bring harm to human and others living creatures. Indeed, everyday is actually bring us one step closer to global warming if we fail to sustain the forest.
Moreover, our forest has the importance values on economic resources and medicine. Believe or not, almost every medicine we used in daily life comes from the forest. Scientist and researchers are studying the uses of plant in the forest to make a new vaccine or medicine to cure many diseases such as malaria. In other context, the natural forest can be seen as a great attractiveness to be an ecotourism place. There are hundreds and thousands of plant and animal species in our Malaysian forest which are unique and very rare in the world such the pakma or its scientific name is Rafflesia. Therefore, the visiting from tourist is actually promoting our country to be a great place with its rich natural resources.
We should realise that to sustain the natural environment in our forest requires full effort from each parties. As can be seen, FRIM has conducted various programmes such as seminars, workshops, courses and conferences to educate public on the importance of forest. And, all programmes are actually based on “ALL CARE” which means Amen, Law and Legislation, Conservation, Afforestation, Research and last but not least Education. An activity such as a Canopy Walk is a good exposure for public to have a better view on the issue of why we should reserve the forest. Indeed, such activity can enhance public learning experience in the forest so that they will be more appreciating the natural environment and throw out an effort to preserve it.
To sum up, as an initiative or realisation, we should take a good care of our forest for the sake of our next generation..
